Dr. Devlin Puts State College at Ease with Sedation Dentistry

August 17, 2011

Lions and tigers and dentists! Oh… my? As unlikely as it may seem, a deep-seated fear of the dentist is actually quite common. The worst part is, it prevents many from visiting the dentist… until an emergency arises. And if you avoid the dentist, you can be sure emergencies will arise.

But never fear! Sedation dentistry is here! Dr. Devlin encourages fearful or anxious patients to learn more about how sedation can change the way they look at dental treatment.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation enables patients undergoing any procedure to rest comfortably as Dr. Devlin to give your teeth and gums the care they require. IV sedation is typically reserved for more intensive dental treatments, like oral surgery or extractions. However, for patients who experience tremendous fear at the thought of any dental procedure, we may suggest IV sedation. The best part is, with IV sedation, you will have no memory of the experience. Within a few seconds of beginning the IV drip, you’ll be sound asleep; and in what feels like no time at all, you’ll awake to find it’s all over.

Oral Conscious Sedation

For most patients with dental anxiety, oral conscious sedation is more than sufficient for most procedures. If you and Dr. Devlin agree that oral sedation is right for you, he will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to be taken by mouth one to two hours before your appointment. When we begin your treatment, we will also administer nitrous oxide. You will remain completely comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, while still awake enough to communicate with the doctor if necessary. As with IV sedation, the entire treatment will feel as though it lasted only moments.

If you struggle with dental fear or anxiety, call our State College office today, and find out what Dr. Devlin can do for you! We also proudly serve patients in Bellefonte, Centre Hall, and Altoona.
