You need consistently superior dental care. State College dentist, Dr. Chris Devlin, and his team would love to provide it for you. They are accepting new patients right now. While this experienced dentist in State College provides an amazing array of restorative and cosmetic dental services, his primary emphasis is prevention. It’s the mainstay of a healthy, good-looking smile you can enjoy for a lifetime.

What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry has two important aspects: at-home oral hygiene and in-office care at Devlin Dental. You know that twice daily brushing and flossing are musts for healthy teeth and gums. But, did you know that a healthy diet, wearing a mouthguard for sports or tooth-grinding (bruxism) are also part of prevention?

Dr. Chris Devlin and his staff provide the in-office portion of preventive dentistry in their comfortable and contemporary office. When you join us as a new patient, we make sure you are welcomed and at ease, and we make every effort to get to know you and your dental needs very well.

The oral examination and hygienic cleaning gives Dr. Devlin a wealth of information to help you prevent dental decay and gum disease–the biggest causes of tooth loss in the United States today. Based on his findings, Dr. Devlin customizes a treatment plan which will prevent problems, treat any issues early on and beautify your smile. In summary, your at-home efforts, smile goals and in-office care combine to keep your oral health at its very best.

The Routine Appointment

It should happen every six months. So, when you come to Devlin Dental for the first time, the staff will ask you when you received your last check-up and cleaning. Then, the hygienist will take a basic health history, including current medications, and take some digital X-rays and other imaging so the doctor gets an accurate picture of your current dental health.

The hygienist also performs a critical part of the routine appointment: the professional cleaning. The objective is removal of harmful plaque and tartar which brushing and flossing miss. The process is simple and comfortable, yet so important.

Plaque and tartar harbor harmful oral bacteria. Left unchecked, they literally overrun your tooth enamel and gums, leaving you with cavities and gum disease. Additionally, the dental cleaning polishes your teeth, freshens your breath and gives Dr. Devlin a clear view of your mouth.

His comprehensive oral examination includes:

  • Visual inspection for decay
  • Measurement of gum pockets
  • A painless oral cancer assessment
  • Checking the condition of restorations such as fillings
  • A bite and tooth alignment assessment
  • Assessment of jaw joint function

When he’s done, Dr. Devlin will tell you what he’s found and make recommendations specific for your needs. He also wants your input on the treatment process–that is, what are your concerns about and goals for your smile?
